The Riding Experience

Each day begins with a shuttle up into the Andes, followed by 1-3 thrilling descents through ever-changing terrain.

If you’re not a fan of shuttles… you will be here! The elevation is between 3500-4500m and it’s quite hard to put in any effort to say the least. Some days will still have some minor uphill components.

The terrain vary from technical and rocky to flowy and smooth, sometimes on ancient inca trails with stairs to ride and through pasture lands and eucalyptus forests in the valley. Many of the trails were old walking paths linking villages so they are quite ‘raw’, not mountain bike specific and in this way they can be a bit more challenging than manicured North American trails. The terrain is ever-changing as we descend through different climate zones.

The trails in Peru are not purpose-built for mountain biking, which creates a raw and authentic riding experience that can be more demanding than manicured North American trails.

Skill & Fitness Level

DSC08186Day 0: Arrival in Cusco – Acclimatization Day

We advise everyone to arrive at least a day (preferably 2) before our first riding day to get acclimatized to the elevation and enjoy historic Cusco. One of the most scenic rides of the trip begins with a shuttle to Lares Pass at 4400m. The descent follows a mossy alpine trail through meadows and ancient Inca paths all the way to the town of Calca. We love it so much we do 2 laps on the upper part of the trail where we can practice the rocky terrain, switchbacks and enjoy the flow. Expect massive views, big smiles, and unforgettable terrain. We’ll have a well deserved lunch at the lodge then grab the shuttle for some shopping time at the quaint town of Pisac.

This cultural ride begins just outside of Misminay, where fields and ancient trails lead to the impressive Inca site of Moray.  The trail from there becomes more technical and exposed with unique features, seashell fossils and of course more amazing views! Our last trail takes us to another spectacular view above the Maras Salt Mines, in continuous use since pre-Inca times. We’ll switchback our way down to have a chance to buy salt right from the source. Today’s lunch is at a beautiful and private outdoor setting.

    Day 5: Visit Machu Picchu

No biking today—just awe and wonder. An early shuttle takes the group to Ollantaytambo, where a scenic train ride brings you to Aguas Calientes. From there, a short bus ride climbs the mountain to Machu Picchu, where a private guided tour reveals the history of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lunch follows before returning to the Sacred Valley in time for dinner at the lodge.

Activity: Full-day excursion to Machu Picchu
Includes: Train, shuttle, guided tour & lunch

Day 6: Ride The Other Side & Chinchero

A lesser-known gem in the Sacred Valley, the Other Side and Chinchero offer jaw-dropping views and big descents. We’ll be putting our skills to use today navigating technical features, steeper lines and exposed sections. Today is an adrenaline-filled pure DH experience! Great photo ops guaranteed.

Day 7: Ride Patacancha Valley to Pumamarca

One of the most scenic and meaningful rides of the trip. From a remote mountain pass at 4350m, you’ll descend through the Patacancha Valley. This ride will have the most pedalling of the trip as we contour the mountainsides weaving between potato patches and alpaca and lama pastures. We’ll arrive in the traditional village of Huilloc. Here, we’ll be treated to a family-made traditional lunch in their home, giving us a glimpse into rural Peruvian life. The final descent to Ollantaytambo is absolutely stunning with views above the terraces as afternoon light glimmers on the farmlands below. It’s pizza night at the lodge! In their wood fired outdoor pizza oven, along with a pisco sour, this is a fantastic way to celebrate the last night of the trip!

Day 8: Final Ride & Transfer to Cusco

After breakfast, we’ll enjoy one last ride in Lamay, most likely repeating our favourite trail from the top! We’ll do a quick lunch and a bike tear down and be in the shuttle by 3pm to head back to Cusco. You’ll be dropped off at your chosen hotel or at the airport if your flight is 7pm or later.

  • More Details

Within 1 week of registering, you’ll be emailed a ton of information including details on pack list, bike prep, directions, and FAQ sheet.

    GETTING THERE

All guests must arrive to Cusco, Peru and ready for pick up the morning of the first day. Flights are not included. Any accommodations prior to Day 1 are not included. We recommend arriving at least 2 days in advance to acclimatize to the altitude and environment.

    LODGING AND CUISINE

We’ll be staying the first night in Cusco where you’ll have time to explore the town by foot and explore the historic sites, world class cuisine, shops and bustling markets. The following nights will be at a private and secluded lodge in the lush Sacred Valley. This lodge is a dream come true! Lovely gardens to relax in with hammocks, beautiful rooms, a private chef, outdoor eating area and pizza oven. Peru’s food is fresh with almost everything produced and grown within the country. Lots of salads, seafoods, meats and unique variety’s of corn, beans and of course the opportunity to try alpaca at some fine restaurants. You’ll be amazed by the quality and variety of food in Peru!

    CLIMATE

As the equator runs through Peru, temperatures are generally quite warm. Altitude, however, decreases the temperature considerably, and you should anticipate daytime temperatures as cold as 5-15 degrees Celsius (41-59 Fahrenheit) at the highest altitudes, with nights dipping towards 0 Celsius (32 Fahrenheit) in the high mountains.

Dry season runs from March through late October. Rain is infrequent but possible especially in November, so as per the included pack list – bring raingear. When riding in the mountains riders must be prepared for quick changes in weather and temperature. Due the proximity to the equator and the altitude, the sun is intense.

    GEAR NEEDED:

All-mountain  / enduro bike (150mm +  travel) – there will be very little uphill pedalling. The trails can be rough and bumpy with repetitive roll downs or stairs so an enduro style bike is the best. We highly recommend not bringing a short travel bike (130mm and less). Rental bike information is not guaranteed at this time but the Lodge will most likely have something. Mandatory equipment: knee pads, elbow pads highly recommended, full finger gloves. Lightweight full face helmet is optional but recommended along with eyewear. 10-15l pack to carry water, extra clothes, lunch. You are responsible for bringing and packing your bike – we can help you with any issues and questions. Within 1 week of registering you will be emailed a ton of information including details on pack list, bike prep, flight info, and FAQ sheet.
